Playreading Kenya Presents: The Art of Playreading — A Workshop

About your teachers:
Esther Kamba is a Kenyan-Canadian theatre director, curator, feminist provocateur, and founder of Playreading KE, a platform using live play readings to foster civic dialogue and cultural memory. She holds a BA in Theatre Studies from York University in Canada and has curated over 20 public playreading events across Nairobi since 2022. Esther’s work centers on justice, memory, and resistance through performance, and she is passionate about creating accessible spaces for healing and collective reflection through theatre. Esther offers an expressive and methodological approach to text interpretation and performance.
Joseph Obel is a Kenyan writer, performer, sonic artist, and theatre producer with a BA in Theatre and Film Studies from Kenyatta University and advanced training in Playwriting from the National Queer Theatre in New York City. His work blends storytelling, spirituality, and healing to explore voice, identity, and community. As co-lead programmer at Playreading KE, Obel offers a cross-disciplinary approach to text interpretation and performance.
